I went to the gunshow today with $300 in my pocket looking for a deal, Rifle or pistol, I didn't care, as long as it was within my price range and fired a readily available round, What I got was a Yugo SKS MDL. 59/66, I haven't been keeping up with the Market value, but was $159 a good deal??? I'm just happy to have something other than a 12 gauge and a .22 for a change, It looks good and seems in working order, but I still need to go shoot it.

The price sounds about right. I was considering getting a Yugo sks myself recently but ended up getting a VZ58 instead, I might still get one later. From what I have heard the Yugos are the best made SKS's of all, $159 for a quality rifle that should last you a lifetime has got to be a good deal.
The ammo is dirt cheap as well, I paid $290 Canadian for two cases containing 2240 rounds. Cheap shooting, I can't even reload for that price.

Just thought I should mention that a lot of the 7.62 x 39 ammo around is a bit corrosive, don't forget to clean it when you finish shooting, especially as the bore is not chrome lined.

Those are neat versions of the SKS.. and my favorite. Considering that you were shopping a show.. the actual markup on it seems reasonable. Solid deal.

I like it also.

As to price just think how costly a new one would be on todays market with the same materials and workmanship.

Well, I took it out and shot off a few rounds, No problems so far, it seems to be in excellent shape, now I just need to get used to it and get my groupings better, and buy a few thousand more rounds of ammo for it :ohyeah: :sniper:

SKS is a fine light weight rifle. I have a chicom version thats about as crude as they come but it's robust, reliable and surprisingly accurate.

Beyond that I think there is a lot of milsurp out there, especially the Yugo/Mausers, that are well worth the look.

Thought I saw the J&G Sales ad in SGN today with the Yugo SKS for $89.99. It doesn't show up on their web site so it could be someone else or just a SGN special.

There's a lot of 7.62 X 39 around here, so much so that there seems almost to be a price war going on between the dealers. I was at a gun show yesterday and was told that the Czechs had dumped 37 million rounds on the market. Just as well it's good ammo, because I can see cases of this being around for a long time to come.

It's becoming almost impossible for me to find, none of the places I've looked have any left, except CTD and they only have the more expensive stuff, Walmart is even out around here. I'm glad I got 40 rounds when I bought the gun, I'm just wishing I had bought more, they had it, but I was expecting to have no problems getting more later.

Can you get the 7.62 X 39 that comes on stripper clips in light blue 20 rnd carboard boxes ? If not there must be some reason why the Czech ammo is not allowed into the US, otherwise there should be pleanty.

Well since some knotheads here in the states made a handful of AK Pistols if it's steel core it's now considered an AP pistol round. Which, IIRC, ist verboten by the ATFE. :rolleye:

That explains it then, I just knew that bullshit would be the reason behind it.

I just talked to a local gun dealer and he told me that basically the whole country is out of 7.62x39 ammo, has anyone else heard anything along those lines???

Also he told me that it's best to use steel case ammo in an SKS, and to try to avoid brass, Is this true?, and if so, Why?

Well, on another forum a young fellow had trouble with US made brass case ammo, REM/UMC, in his Yugo SKS so there might be something to that.

Young guy's problem was that the bullets were pushing back into the case. The US made ammo didn't have the case neck crimped tight enough. I stick with military or Wolf ammo in my commie guns.

So what do you think of your SKS Don't Tread ?

I had a go with a chinese SKS-D yesterday and it was a lot better than I expected, the finish and fit was also much better that I was led to believe. I think I will get one, they sell for peanuts, are made to take AK mags and I already have the ammo.

I haven't had any problems with it so far, which is odd considering all I've been shooting is Winchester White Box......

I have heard that some ammo can cause problems, but if it works then stick with it. What's the accuracy like ?
The only problem with the Czech stuff I'm using is that it's corrosive which means I have to go overboard every time I clean it. I can get non corrosive Chinese stuff but it's twice the price.

I paid that $89.00 for my Norinco...10 years ago.

Get Russian ammo, much less corrosive than the Chicom stuff.

A little piece of wire costs nothing, and can sure make them sing.

The D model is a good buy.

I had one for awhile long time back. Worked well and was a real accurate shooter after some tweaking.

I bought a Norinco D couple of weeks ago, I'm very pleased with it. I can get 6" groups from a bench rest at 140 yds if I do my bit properly, that ain't at all bad for iron sights especially with my eyes. It is a very solidly built thing, I think it should last me out with ease. I got the proper mags for it just yesterday, much better than the shitty little 5rnd thing that it came with.
